Dining, Entertainment & Shopping
One of South Austin’s most well-known shopping strips, South Congress, also known as SoCo, is a street lined with stores and restaurants that are unique, funky, and retro. Full of character, charm, and history, the avenue is a popular place for residents to socialize, shop, and talk. It is the home of such shops as Lucy in Disguise, New Bohemia, Blackmail, Uncommon Objects, and Goodie Two Shoes. Shoppers can get everything they need on this one street.
An Asian smokehouse and bar, Loro provides smoked and grilled meats complemented by Japanese and Southeast Asian-inspired sides and sauces. With a casual, communal atmosphere, the restaurant provides a large indoor dining room and a shaded outdoor porch. The pairing of Texas and Asian flavors and techniques creates a new experience with a familiar feel.
Mattie’s provides French cuisine, exotic dishes, and traditional Southern food, ideal for special occasions or brunch. Built within a 19th-century farmhouse, the restaurant boasts a patio area and a chic lounge. The Odd Duck serves New American food in a contemporary atmosphere. Inspired by Austin’s unique culture, the restaurant is known for its passion, hospitality, and creativity.
Things to Do
An urban park covering 351 acres and providing a theater, sports facilities, a spring-fed pool, botanical gardens, and more, the Zilker Metropolitan Park is one-of-a-kind. Thought to be the city’s most beloved park, it puts on a multitude of fun events for residents. In addition to the previously mentioned features, it also offers a playground, disc golf course, clubhouse, and the Austin Nature and Science Center.
The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center can be found at the University of Texas and was opened in 1982. Created to inspire native plant conservation and to research Texas wildflowers, sustainable landscape design, and landscape restoration, the center is known for its outreach and educational programs, research developments, and sustainable gardens.
Dedicated to the presentation and discovery of creativity, the Long Center for the Performing Arts combines traditional performing arts with cutting-edge musicians and world-renowned scholars and authors. The countless events presented at the center make it a stunning place for all Austin locals to enjoy arts, entertainment, and culture.
Art for the People Gallery is an independent gallery that has been supporting local artists for almost a decade. More than 120 Austin artists present their original works at the gallery. It is a place where art is respected and enjoyed, and artists flourish.
